The church of St Barnabas is set back from the road at the eastern end of the village with fine views to the south and east. The stone and flint building dates from the 12th and 14th centuries, although the location was used by Saxons and earlier worshippers. The site has been designated a Regionally Important Geological Site because of the unusual number of large boulders in and around the churchyard; this probably indicates a Pagan site of great antiquity.

The parish of Alphamstone: St Barnabas is committed to the safeguarding of children, young people and adults. We follow the House of Bishops guidance and policies and have our own Parish Safeguarding Officer(s), PSOs. The Diocese of Chelmsford's safeguarding pages contain vital links and information including contacts for the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor (DSA) who advise our PSOs. If you are concerned that a child or adult has been harmed or may be at risk of harm please contact the DSA. If you have immediate concerns about the safety of someone, please contact the police and your local authority Children or Adults Services.
